Home Playoff Game on the line in Hart vs Morgan game (Independent Mail)

Bulldogs play to host playoff game

Coming off a narrow win over its archrival, the stakes only get higher this week for Hart County.

When the Bulldogs play host to Morgan County in their final regular season home game, they have a chance to nail down a home playoff game.

While the team has won five straight games this season, the program last hosted a playoff game in 2009 when it lost to Grady. If Hart (5-3, 5-0 in Region 8-AAA) wins out against Morgan and next week at North Oconee, it would win its first region title since 2001.

“I think they’re starting to understand,” Hart coach William DeVane said of the magnitude of the next two weeks. “This program needs to be in this situation year in and year out. To me, it’s still a learning process.”

It’s been a decisive turnaround for a team that missed the playoffs last season for the first time in 19 years, and began this year 0-3.

DeVane said his message on Sunday was to get his players’ emotions back on an even keel.

Morgan County is 6-2 and 3-2 in Region 8-AAA with losses to North Oconee and Elbert County. Against the Blue Devils, a late fumble near the goal line saved the game for Elbert.

DeVane said Morgan — also the Bulldogs — is similar to Elbert, but has bigger linemen and passes the ball more often.

“It’s going to be a challenge,” he said.
